Areas of Treatment
The areas to be treated will be determined by your goal and treatment plan as discussed with your therapist.
The following photos will help you understand different techniques and draping and what to expect.
Back: Almost everyone has issues in their back. We tend to hold all of our “tension” either between our shoulder blades or in our low back. Using a variety of techniques this “tension” can be released.
Neck: This is also a problem area for most people. If you are prone to headaches then having a treatment for your neck can help to alleviate them. The neck can be treated while the client is prone or supine (lying on their stomach or on their back).
Shoulders: This is the area that completes the triad of typical massage therapy treatment.
Legs including Feet: Hamstrings, quadriceps and calf muscles are only the half of it! There are many muscles that are in your legs and help with standing, sitting and walking. If you are having any issues with those activities then treatment of your legs should be added to your treatment plan.
Buttock: This area includes three sets of gluteus muscles, and several muscles that attach to the hip and low back. If you have trouble with your low back and/or your hips consider having this area treated. As you can see in the photo draping is very secure. If that makes you uncomfortable then treatment can be done on top of the sheets.
Arms including Hands: Most clients don’t even think of having their arms included in treatment, however in this day and age we use our hands and arms for almost everything, especially if you use a computer for several hours a day, or a tablet/smart-phone. Many small muscles are needed for a single swipe of the screen.
Chest: Connected to the arm at the shoulder the pectoralis major and minor muscles can become shortened and often are included in treatment of the arm. They can also be treated separately.
Breast: Breast massage is something that anyone with breast tissue should consider adding to a treatment. This treatment is especially recommended to anyone who is breast feeding, has larger breasts or has had surgery on their breasts (augmentation, reduction, and mastectomy) to help reduce scar tissue. These pictures show a V drape to treat the muscles that attach to the sternum. Treatment also includes the actual breast tissue and can be done undraped or on top of the sheet.
Intra-oral: This is the treatment for anyone who has Temporal Mandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJD) or anyone who grinds their teeth (bruxism) or tends to clench. This treatment can be uncomfortable, but is finished with soothing face, neck and scalp techniques.
Face: Used with an Intra-oral treatment or added to a treatment of the neck.
Pregnancy/Side Lying: Sometimes you might not be able to lie on your stomach or on your back. In this case you can still receive treatment while lying on your side.
